Husband-Wife Medical Team Help Residents Reduce Fatigue, Insomnia, Headaches, Arthritis, Dizziness & More!

Real-World Proof of EMF Mitigation Effectiveness

In a condominium in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan, residents lived under the shadow of a mobile phone base station installed on their rooftop. For years, radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) from the antennas contributed to a range of health complaints. Then came Tetsuharu Shinjyo, a local internal medicine physician, and his wife Akemi, who together conducted a study that documented the problem—and the remarkable recovery after the antennas producing RF emissions were removed. Their work, known as the Shinjyo RF Mitigation Study, offers clear evidence that reducing EMF exposure can lead to significant health improvements. For homeowners and office workers concerned about modern wireless exposures, their findings provide practical inspiration to take action.

Identifying the Issue: Symptoms in the Community

The base station began operating in 1998 with 800 MHz antennas, followed by 2 GHz units in 2008. Over time, residents reported persistent symptoms: fatigue, insomnia, headaches, tinnitus, dizziness, and more. Many of these issues intensified after the second set of antennas was added.

In January 2009, the Shinjyos surveyed 107 residents who were exposed to radio frequency “microwave” EMF levels that Building Biology classifies as biologically significant — even at the lowest measured value. While resident RF exposures were below official safety limits they were still sufficient to correlate with many adverse health effects. Among the group:

  • 34 residents reported 66 symptom cases during the 800 MHz period.
  • 41 residents experienced 158 cases after the 2 GHz “upgrade.”

Common complaints included fatigue (affecting over 20 people), sleep disturbances, eye irritation, shoulder stiffness, and jitteriness. The Shinjyos carefully documented each case, noting overlaps and patterns that pointed to the base station as a likely factor.

Taking Action: Removal of the Transmitter Antennas

Convinced by the data and resident feedback, the Shinjyos organized efforts to have the antennas decommissioned. The 800 MHz units were removed in June 2009, followed by the 2 GHz antennas in August. Three months later, in November 2009, the team returned to reassess the same 107 participants through follow-up interviews and examinations.

Statistical analysis (chi-square tests) confirmed the changes were significant, with p-values below 0.05 for key symptoms. No other major environmental or lifestyle factors had shifted during this period.

The Results: Clear Improvements

The outcomes were striking. Total affected residents dropped from 41 to 15—a 63% reduction. Overlapping symptoms from both frequency bands decreased by 49%.

Arthralgia/Shoulder Stiffness71<0.05

Headaches, numbness, and palpitations also subsided markedly. The Shinjyos concluded that the symptoms were directly linked to RF-EMF exposure, and their removal allowed natural recovery.

Lessons for Today: Measure and Then Reduce Your EMF Levels

The Shinjyo study shows that even “low-level” wireless EMF exposure within regulatory limits can contribute to disabling health effects—and that exposure reductions can lead to noticeable improvements. In our increasingly connected world with WiFi, BlueTooth, 4GLTE, 5G and other wireless devices, these principles of RF reduction in living spaces are directly applicable to creating safer homes and offices.

One interesting aspect that was not mentioned in the study: Cell tower equipment relies on switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) that rapidly switch high currents on and off to convert AC to DC, generating high-frequency voltage transients and harmonic distortions known as “dirty electricity.” These disturbances propagate back through the shared utility grid or ground connections, polluting a building’s electrical system with erratic waveforms that can cause significant biological stress to people and animals.

Switchmode Rectifiers used for telecom power systems can inject EMI pollution into living spaces.

Were some of the occupant health improvements noted by the researchers also related to the reductions in high frequency transients and harmonics that occurred after the SMPS equipment was removed in the building? I suspect this was an additional beneficial mitigation…a ‘twofer!

For Southern California homeowners and business owners, we offer professional testing and practical mitigation solutions to address a wide variety of EMF concerns:

  • Professional Measurement: We use professional Building Biology-approved EMF meters, scopes, and spectrum analyzers to assess exposure levels and pinpoint high-EMF areas in your dwelling.
  • Tailored Mitigation: We guide you on understanding and reducing a variety of artificial EMF sources (electric/magnetic/RF radiation, dirty electricity, light pollution, etc), applying effective shielding, hardwire solutions and filtering of disruptive EMF fields to create safer spaces.
  • Track Your Progress: Our clients often report better sleep, reduced stress, and fewer EMF-related symptoms after our assessment and solutions have been implemented.

The Shinjos’ systematic method—observe, measure, act, verify—transformed a community health problem into a safer place to live. Their results motivate anyone experiencing adverse health symptoms from wireless or other EMF sources to make positive changes to improve living spaces. The right improvements can result in a better quality of life for your entire family.
